University Honors is the oldest, largest, most diverse, and most flexible Honors College Living Learning Program at the University of Maryland. Conceived in 1990, University Honors was created to recruit and educate the most academically talented undergraduate students with an educational focus on course that would support each student’s individual and varied academic goals.

Each year, University Honors offers its students over 130 unique, cutting edge seminars that focus on exploring today’s changing world, asking challenging philosophical questions, practicing high-level creativity, and pushing students to take their academic curiosity off campus and into the world. University Honors students are a vibrant community of intellectuals whose creative thinking and global leadership inspires students to become personally engaged with the largest problems facing our communities and our world at large.

The flexibility of the University Honors program makes it unique among the other Living Learning Programs in the Honors College at the University of Maryland. This flexibility makes it easier for University Honors students to pursue study abroad opportunities, internships, and individual research projects under the supervision of faculty mentors. It is also the only program that does not have a “live-on” requirement, meaning students are free to live on or off-campus. Because of its flexibility, we encourage our University Honors students to pursue leadership opportunities across campus in student advisory boards, student organizations, student government, and more. The huge network of University Honors students on our campus is one of its greatest strengths, and we are proud that they call University Honors home.
